A resin driveway is a popular, visually attractive and resilient surface that can serve you well through different times of the year and various weather conditions, but is most useful when dealing with wet weather as it holds together while allowing rainwater to seep through into the ground, avoiding puddles.
However, while resin driveways have lots of positive aspects, they do need to be laid by a professional and this can only be done in the right conditions. This does mean you might need to be a bit patient to find the ideal time to lay the driveway.
This is because when the surface is laid, it needs to ‘cure’, which means it needs to be dry but not too hot. Even in rainy Cardiff, the first of these hasn’t been much of a problem this year, but the second has, with three summer heatwaves in Wales already and a high likelihood of more to come.
As a result, you may well ask the question: Is early autumn a good time to lay a resin driveway?
Speaking to Ideal Home earlier this summer, driveways expert Bill Jarvis said that while the temperature needs to be above ten degrees C to cure properly (which rules out installation in the winter), if the temperature hits 30 C, it can “cure too quickly and go patchy”.
Instead, he advised, the ideal temperature for curing is between 12 and 25 degrees. This makes a dry spring day the most ideal time of all, but Mr Jarvis said that suitable days often arise between May and September.
The problem this year, of course, is that it has regularly been too hot. No doubt many planned installations around Britain have been postponed as a result.
However, come September, things should be a little cooler and that means the first month of autumn may prove to be one of the best times this year to lay a resin driveway, as long as it isn’t a wet month.
By getting your new surface laid then, it should cure nicely and be in great shape for when the weather challenges of rain and cold weather arrive later in autumn.
