Over the past few years, resin driveways have surged in popularity, with the bright, versatile, durable paving surface winning over homeowners the more they see it.
One of its biggest advantages is that it can be laid over a wide range of existing surfaces, including tarmac, stone and concrete, which can save time on groundwork and installing a suitable sub-base layer.
It is something a lot of homeowners will ask about, given that it means a quicker installation, more affordable drive and less disruption if they need to park a car on their drive.
The answer is that in most cases it can be, but there are a few caveats to consider.
The first is that a resin-bound driveway is a sustainable drainage system (SuDS), but only if it is laid on a suitably permeable base layer. If it is laid onto impermeable concrete, for example, it no longer counts as a sustainable surface.
If you have regular issues with standing water, for example, laying resin over the existing surface will not fix this, as whilst the resin-bound surface is permeable, the other layers underneath it are not.
As well as this, the existing surface needs to be in good condition and be of a solid and stable construction in order for the resin to be laid out equally.
The best surfaces in this regard are concrete driveways in good condition, tarmac that is smooth and even, and in some cases stone pavers although some remedial work may be necessary to stop the flags from shifting underneath the resin.
If the surface is not properly cleaned and prepared, the resin will not properly adhere to the surface, and if there are any cracks or sinking elements to your surface, the resin will be laid unevenly, which can seriously affect its overall lifespan.
